Three Podcasts You Shouldn’t Miss

Hi – getting back into writing after a bit of a break.  I’ve got a bunch of business going on for myself and some of my clients – but more about that later.

Now that I’m no longer driving to Boston all the time, I’ve even become more obsessed with Podcasts.  I listen every day that I’m not biking as I get my 40+ minutes of daily exercise.  I use podcasts as my bribe to fold laundry and do dishes and other things that I really don’t like to do.  When I’m listening to a podcast, I don’t even mind grocery shopping or cleaning my desk!

When I go for a walk, I try to start out with a podcast that can make me smarter, like APMs Marketplace or Mitch Joel’s Six Pixels of Separation.  Once I’ve “eaten my spinach,” I’ll listen to something that keeps me up to speed on topics I’m interested in like music APM’s “Sound Opinions,” or Jesse Thorn’s “The Sound of Young America.”

But that’s just me.  There is more than enough diverse content out there for any fan.  ESPN has a ton of sports podcasts including The Sports Guy’s “BS Report” “Mike and Mike” and “The Tony Kornheiser Show” (talk about an acquired taste!).  MSNBC, Fox, and almost any media outlet you can imagine are all doing podcasts and most of them are free.  This is a great way to keep current on the topics you care about.

Here are some specific podcasts I’ve enjoyed recently.   Let me know if you have any favorite podcasts that you’d like to share…

Why am I Crying?  Music is an incredibly important part of movies.   This “Sound Opinions” podcast features the final “At the Movies” team, NY Times movie critic AO Scott and Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune talking with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot (the Siskel and Ebert of pop music).  This is a great interview that delivers the movie critic’s point of view on the power of music in film — and the abuse of that power.

Luis is the Man.  Who doesn’t love Luis Guzman?  Have you seen him in HBO’s new “How to Make It in America?”  It’s the prequel to “Entourage”, if you know what I mean.  In this “Sound of Young America” podcast, Jesse Thorn interviews Guzman from deep in the woods of Vermont.  Who knew that Guzman was originally a community organizer?

The Sound of Young America

Goin’ Local:  I get a lot of inspiration for my work from Mitch Joel’s “Six Pixels of Separation” podcast which covers the intersection of marketing and technology in a focused, yet expansive manner.  (The podcasts do run a bit long…)  In this episode, Joel and Powered principal Joe Jaffe go mano a mano about the importance and future of FourSquare and other location based Mobile Social media apps.  If you are think mobile social is the future – you are right.
